A lot of positive things in Leicester win - Conte

Antonio Conte is not a man to get carried away but right now almost everything he touches at Tottenham turns to something at least akin to gold.

In fairness, that has been the way for the majority of his 10-month tenure, having secured Champions League qualification against the odds last season.

And while it might have seemed like a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle when he took over, Saturdays ruthless6-2 thrashing of Leicestersuggests the picture on the box is nearing completion.

Spurs are unbeaten in 13 league games, have won seven straight at home and recovered seven points from losing positions already this season - a league high.

Their tally of 17 points is their joint-best record at this stage of a campaign, level with 2016-17 when they finished as runners-up to Chelsea, then managed by guess who? Correct. Conte.

His January window signings of excellent pair Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur have been potentially equalled by the summer captures of the mercurial Richarlison and the versatile and experienced Ivan Perisic.

When a manager can drop - or rotate, as Conte claimed - last seasons joint Golden Boot winner, in the form of Son Heung-min and be rewarded by a hat-trick off the bench, its a sign he can do no wrong.

Factor in Harry Kane eschewing his usual slow start - six goals already - and its fair to say Spurs fans would be wishing the north London derby was tomorrow and not in a fortnights time, with an international break in between.

Suttons predictions: Tottenham v Leicester

Chris Sutton takes on Editors bassist and Aston Villa fan Russell Leetch to pick his winners and losers for the weekends Premier League games.

Tottenham only suffered their first defeat of the season against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday but I have to say that I dont think their performances have always been as good as their results in the past few weeks.

Spurs havent always clicked, which is something for their manager Antonio Conte to think about, but they should still make short work of Leicester even if they dont play well this time too.

The Foxes have got plenty of firepower themselves but their problem is clearly defensively - they always look like they are going to concede goals.

Ive kept Spurs striker Son Heung-min in my fantasy team because this looks like a good game for him to get off the mark this season - so it will be my fault if that doesnt happen.

I can only see another defeat for Leicester. Spurs have always been good going forward but Conte has made them solid at the back too. Who makes the top four is going to be interesting this season, but I think they will be in it.

Tottenham have reported no new fitness concerns, with their only absentee being Lucas Moura, who is still nursing a calf issue.

Head coach Antonio Conte, who said on Thursday no players are undroppable, must decide whether to keep faith with out-of-form forward Son Heung-min.

Leicester will continue to assess midfielder Dennis Praet, who is doubtful with a foot problem.

Ricardo Pereira and Ryan Bertrand remain sidelined.

Conte says England call-up is only a starting point for Dier

Antonio Conte says Eric Diers England call-up is a good achievement for the midfielder, but that there is still plenty of hard work ahead if he wants to get to the World Cup.

Dier, who has not played for the Three Lions since November 2020, has been recalled by Gareth Southgate after an impressive start to the season for Tottenham.

Conte said: Im really pleased because when the national team call my players, I am really proud because it means we are working very well.

We are trying to help the players to go with the national team. In this case with Eric, it was a really good achievement for him.

I can only tell him that it is to be a starting point. He has to get the possibility of getting to the World Cup, especially with this month and a half we have ahead of the World Cup.

Before the World Cup he has to continue to play well, have a good performance, have a good stability and [show] that he is a reliable player. What I can tell him is only this, to continue this way, to continue to work hard and to have this concentration. My staff and I and his team-mates are very happy for this call for the national team.

Conte on Diers England call-up, getting a reaction and Leicester

Antonio Conte has been speaking to the media before Saturdays Premier League match againstLeicester.

Here is what the Tottenham boss had to say:

He is really proud of Eric Dier for his England call-up, but said it is a starting point and he must continue to work hard to make the World Cup squad.

Tuesdays Champions League defeat by Sporting Lisbon was a big chance lost - not only to draw but to get three points.

He wants to see a reaction from his players this weekend and said: We need to be a bit angry and try to have a good reaction. For us its important to get a win.

Conte said he is happy with Emerson Royal and said he has improved a lot since last season.

When asked about Son Heung-min, Conte said: No players are undroppable. This has to be clear.

On Leicester, Conte said: The table is not fair for them. They have a really good squad and a really good manager in Brendan Rodgers.

Tottenham v Leicester: Pick of the stats

Tottenham have won their last six Premier League home games, their longest such run at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They last had a longer home winning run between November 2016 and May 2017 at White Hart Lane (14 games).

Leicester have lost their last five Premier League games, last losing more consecutively in December 2014 (six). Its also manager Brendan Rodgers longest run of defeats in his league career across the Premier League, Championship and Scottish Premiership.

Spurs striker Harry Kane has scored more goals against the Foxes than against any other side (19) - 17 of those goals have come in the Premier League, with only Alan Shearer netting more against one opponent (20 against Leeds).

Jamie Vardy has played 276 Premier League games for Leicester, the joint-most for the club along with Kasper Schmeichel. His next appearance will mean he becomes the third player to be the outright leader for appearances, goals and assists at a Premier League club, along with Troy Deeney (Watford) and Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace).

Tottenham have become very solid but are lacking creativity under the tutelage of Antonio Conte, believes former Spurs boss Martin Jol.

The Dutchman watched his old club slip to a disappointing and surprising defeat in the Champions League againstSportinglast night.

Jol thinks a lack of a spark of ingenuity will prevent them from being genuine title contenders.

They are a very solid team, very hard to beat, Jol told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

Of course, they have got very good players up front as well. When Richarlison comes on, he looks the part as well.

I think they will probably finish top three or top four.

However, they lack a little bit of creativity. They dont have a number 10, like Christian Eriksen to pass the ball. Sometimes, Harry Kane drops in so he can find a pass to Son Heung-min and theyll score goals on transition.

But they need something extra to be a real title contender.

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman feels Tottenham were a little bit sloppy as they fell to two goals in injury time againstSporting.

Antonio Contes side lost their first game since the start of April and sit second in their Champions League group after opening their campaign with victory againstMarseille.

They will be massively disappointed, Osman told BBC Radio 5 Lives Football Daily podcast.

When in the latter stages and youve not been quite at it, you make sure you do not concede and that you come out with a draw.

Im sure Conte will be using this as a message and learning tool moving forward.

Osman was also surprised the Spurs boss did not seek to make more changes with Dejan Kulusevskis introduction on 72 minutes their only substitute.

They have got an impressive squad now, he said. They can make changes to freshen things up but only Sporting did that. They forced the issue and a few mistakes.

Antonio Conte labelled Tottenhams loss atSportinga difficult result as he contemplated his sides first defeat since 2 April.

Spurs were twice undone in injury time and defeat in Portugal saw them slip to second in their Champions League group.

When you lose the game you are not happy. I think that the game was unbalanced in the second half, we could score, Conte said.

We tried to win the game and then in the last 10 minutes we can do much better. They scored with a corner and we conceded the second goal after the 90 minutes.

It is a pity. You have to try and feed the box and have accuracy and go strong to attack the goal.

We had two or three situations where we can do much better. A difficult game for sure.
